Ivonne Montealegre Builds a Legacy of Inclusion with SiGMA Poker Tour Debut

Ivonne Montealegre’s journey in the poker world began in Costa Rica and has since taken her across continents, establishing her as one of the most respected figures in the industry. Now based in Malta, she is known not only for launching a successful mind sport circuit but also for her leadership as Director of International Affairs for the Women’s Poker Association. Inclusion has long been central to her mission, and she has worked tirelessly to elevate the role of women in the game.

When she was entrusted with launching the SiGMA Poker Tour (SPT), Ivonne threw herself into the challenge with total dedication. Despite her vast experience, this was no ordinary project. It required months of fast-paced planning and on-the-ground work in São Paulo. She left her family behind and immersed herself in making the event a success.

“Watching this event come to life is incredibly emotional,” she shared. “It’s like raising a child. You nurture it with love, watch it grow, and hope the world embraces it.”

Now, at the Monte Carlo Poker Club, she’s seeing the results of that hard work. The first-ever SPT event is unfolding in a space custom-built for the occasion and buzzing with life.

Building More Than a Tournament

For Ivonne, the SiGMA Poker Tour is about more than cards and chips. It is about creating meaningful impact. Through its close partnership with the SiGMA Foundation, the tour is already making a difference in local communities.

“Last week, we built a school in a favela,” she said. “We also created a martial arts center to support at-risk youth, giving them a positive path and real opportunities. That’s what fills me with the most pride.”

She also emphasized the importance of the economic boost the tour brings. The SiGMA conference, which runs alongside the poker events, serves as a hub for networking and innovation. “It’s a dream come true when poker connects with business,” she said. “We offer so much more than just a tournament. It’s a full experience.”

The Brazilian poker community, Ivonne noted, has embraced the event with open arms. “Brazil is incredible. The people are passionate, the energy is amazing. I want this to be a yearly tradition in São Paulo, growing bigger and better each time.”

A Vision for the Future

Among the most meaningful moments during the debut event was the SiGMA Divas tournament, dedicated to championing women in poker. “Seeing 105 women show up to play? That’s beautiful,” Ivonne said. “We want to keep creating these opportunities, helping women transition from smaller events to major stages where they can win life-changing money.”

The success of players like Darya Krashennikova, who led the Main Event chip counts, underscores what’s possible when women are given the platform to shine. “Being that bridge, that catalyst for someone’s breakthrough, that’s what makes me happiest,” she added.

Looking ahead, the tour moves to Malta in September, where Ivonne is already planning something even more ambitious. “We have a fantastic partnership with Portomaso Casino, and everything runs smoothly there. But no matter where we go, our core values stay the same: community, fun, and inclusion.”

“As the former president of the International Women in Poker Association, those values aren’t just part of the event,” she said. “They’re part of my life. They’re part of my legacy.”
